This volume contains a selection of the papers presented at the tenth annual meeting of Computational Linguistics in the Netherlands. The meeting was hosted by the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS. The original aim of the conference was to provide the members of the Dutch and Belgian computational linguistic community with the opportunity to report on current research and to function as an informal meeting place. However, CLIN's reputation is expanding beyond the Dutch and Belgian borders since papers were presented also by researchers coming from: Denmark, England, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, and USA.
The tenth CLIN anniversary featured an absolute record in presentations and in participation: 58 talks were delivered and more than 100 computational linguists attended the event. The papers presented at the conference ranged over various areas of computational linguistics including: corpus linguistics, discourse, grammar engineering, information extraction, lexicography, logic and Natural Language Processing, parsing, semantics, statistical methods and syntax. The keynote speaker of the conference was Aravind Joshi (University of Pennsylvania) whose talk Explorations of a domain of locality touched on several of the topics represented at the conference.
Only a selection of the papers submitted for publication have been accepted. I would like to thank all the reviewers for their help with this difficult task: Raffaella Bernardi, Antal van den Bosch, Gosse Bouma, Marie-Helene Candito, Walter Daelemans, Tomaz Erjavec, Frank Van Eynde, Jan Jaspars, Emiel Krahmer, John Nerbonne, Gertjan van Noord, Adam Przepiorkowski, Henriette de Swart, Rolf Wiehagen, Shuly Wintner and Jakub Zavrel.
Thanks to Raffaella Bernardi for her help with the compilation of this volume and for the realization of the on-line version of the proceedings.
Thanks are also due to the Netherlands Organization for Scientific
Research (NWO) and to the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS for
their financial support that made possible the organization of
the conference and the publication of the proceedings.
Information about past and future CLIN meetings as well as the on-line
proceedings can be found at CLIN home page.
