Receptive multilingualism in Experts' intercultural DiscourseLanguage Development Project description / Abstract The research goal of this study is to investigate felicitous intercultural discourse between experts in economic, academic and administrative institutions. The central research questions concern: which discourse structures characterise intercultural discourse between experts, and how is their interaction influenced by modes of receptive multilingualism? The research focuses on two genres, namely the 'exposé' (a statement of fact) and the 'planning discussion'. The subject of research concerns different constellations of German-Dutch intercultural communication, including so-called 'receptive multilingualism' (e.g. where both interlocutors speak their mother tongue and understand the other's language). The research is innovative, compared to current linguistic tradition on intercultural discourse, in focusing on structures of intercultural understanding instead of explanations of intercultural misunderstandings. The theoretical relevance of the project concerns the development of a functional linguistic theory that takes bi- or multilingual competencies as its starting point. The research proposal focuses on economic institutions in the Dutch-German border area, since receptive multilingualism is familiar there. In the second part, the research is compared with administrative and academic institutions in international cooperation. Empirical data are collected in case studies. References |
