Capeverdian: a Portuguese Creole in contact with Dutch

In the present project, Capeverdian Creole will be studied from an integrated sociolinguistic and grammatical perspective.
The following two steps can be distinguished, chronologically: In the first place, a description of Capeverdian will be given, with a possible extension to the history of the language and aspects of language change in relation to Portuguese. Secondly, the nature of language contact and type of codeswitching between Dutch and Capeverdian Creole will be studied. The focus on these two main topics will depend on the orientation of the PhD student. In practice, the following research questions have to be answered:

1. (Part one)
   What does Capeverdian Creole look like and how has it developed and changed in relation to Portuguese (the lexifier language)?
2. (Part two)
   1. What strategies do speakers rely on to accomplish congruence between Dutch and Capeverdian Creole in order to facilitate codeswitching?
   2. What kinds of codeswitching occurs between Capeverdian Creole and Dutch? Is there a relation between the kind of codeswitching and the type of society in which it occurs? A comparison will be made made with other language pairs, such as Turkish/Dutch, Moroccan Arabic/Dutch, Hindi/English or Spanish/English?
