Anaphoric binding and morphological objects

The phenomena subject to detailed investigation in this project are generally known under the heading of ‘lexical binding’, a type of anaphoric binding on a presyntactic level which can be illustrated with examples like English self-defense or Dutch zelfverdediging.

A first goal of the project is descriptive and consists of making an inventory of relevant data, more in particular:

    1. the determination of the range of morphological constructions that allow types of binding, in terms of the morphologically determined structures and readings (*zichbewust,*elkaarhaat, eigenbelang, zelfdragend and others).
    2. the examination of the corresponding (im)possibilities in other languages (in particular French auto-défense, *se-didacte, *même-porteur and others).

A second goal is to set up a general typology of anaphoric expressions. This typology is to be built in a way in which the participation in word formation of some but not all anaphoric expressions comes out. In this part the ‘needs’ of presyntactic binding are connected to and influence the typology as used for syntactic binding; as such the project will shed light on the morphology - syntax interface, and more in particular on referentiality differences and differences in ‘functional’ information.

The goal of the project is to contribute to an explanatory theory of binding inside morphological objects; on this level the varieties of binding found in morphological objects crucially also function as a test for Reinhart & Reuland’s binding theory and could contribute to the assessment of this theory.
