From the beginning UiL OTS played an important role in initiatives towards a National Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT). In July 1994 this research school was officially recognised for a five year period by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, with UiL OTS being designated as the participant carrying the responsibility for the administration of the school as a whole. Recognition for another 5 year period was obtained in 1999. Through its computational and logical research UiL OTS also participates in the Dutch Graduate School in Logic (OzsL). The Graduate School was founded in 1992 and was recognised by the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in 1993. In 1997 the KNAW renewed recognition.
Four research institutes operate in LOT: UiL OTS (penholder); the Centre for Language Studies (CLS) of the University of Brabant, the University of Nijmegen and the Max Planck Institut für Psycholinguistik; the Institute for Functional Linguistics and Language Behaviour (IfOTT) of the University of Amsterdam, the Free University of Amsterdam and Leiden University; the Dutch Institute for Generative Linguistics (HIL) of Leiden University, the Free University of Amsterdam, and the University of Amsterdam. The Centre for Behavioural, Cognitive and Neuro-sciences (BCN) of the University of Groningen operates in the programming and organisation of the international summer and winter schools.
OzsL is a national research school for the study of logic and its applications (logic and mathematics, logic and linguistics, logic and computer science). Partners in the Institute are the Institute of Language, Logic and Computation (ILLC) of the University of Amsterdam (penholder), the Graduate School for Behavioral, Cognitive and Neurosciences (BCN) of the University of Groningen, and the UiL OTS of Utrecht University.
The curriculum of the UiL OTS PhD programme is partly subsumed under the programme of these graduate schools. The PhD students at UiL OTS obligatorily choose a number of courses offered by LOT; they may also select courses offered by the OzsL or participate in national and international summer schools. LOT organises two course blocks of two weeks every year, in January and June, the LOT Schools. OzsL organises introductory course blocks and masterclasses throughout the year.
