UiL OTS takes part in and benefits from quite a number of national and international research projects. Close institutional collaboration with the following institutes and research groups in The Netherlands will be continued in the planning period: the section Theoretical Philosophy of the Faculty of Philosophy of Utrecht University, the Centre of Mathematics and Computer Science in Amsterdam, the Department of Ear, Nose and Throat Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) and Phoniatrics of the Faculty of Medicine of Utrecht University, the Institute for Perception Research in Eindhoven, the participants in the Centre for Language and Communication in the Netherlands (CLCN), comprising research groups in applied linguistics of the technical universities (Twente, Eindhoven and Delft).
Researchers from the Phonetics and the Computational Linguistics and Logic groups participates in several European research projects, training programmes and several language engineering projects subsidised by the Commission of the European Community. (ELSNET, several SOCRATES projects, EAGLES, several ESPRIT-projects).
Researchers from the Language Use group participate in the Cognitive Linguistics Network administered by the Department of Linguistics of the Catholic University of Leuven (KUL). This network comprises the major Flemish Universities, and three institutions from abroad, UiL-OTS being one of them; the other two are the University of Aarhus, Denmark, and the University of California at San Diego, USA.
Several researchers from the Syntax & Semantics group participate in two internationally organised research groups: the SynCom project, an 'expert system' in the area of syntactic theorising (Bilbao, Durham, Groningen, Los Angeles, Stuttgart, Tilburg, Utrecht), and the Typological Resources Center initiative (Amsterdam, Berlin, Lancaster, Leiden, Leipzig, Manchester, Nijmegen, Utrecht).
UiL OTS researchers participate in the NWO research programmes on Language and Speech Technology, the programme on the Multicultural and Pluriform Society and the Dyslexia programme.
Via the Netherlands graduate school in linguistics, UiL OTS participates in a programmes for cooperation with the North West Centre of Linguistics in Great Britain, a cooperative enterprise of the universities of Manchester, Lancaster, Salford, Bangor, Liverpool and UMIST.
Since 1995 UiL OTS is functioning as the coordination site for ELSNET. ELSNET, the European Network in Language and Speech, has the objective of providing a framework for coordinating European research and postgraduate training activities which promote the development of speech and natural language (NL) technology.
UiL OTS also houses the Foundation of Language Technology and the Foundation of Speech Technology, set up to promote contract research and subsidised research in the areas of Language and Speech Technology.
